If you had to ask the greatest artists today what they played when they started, you would find an astoundingly amount of correlation. Some of them WORKED their way through that pile of exercises and literature, and some of them sailed through at a pace that the rest of us find incredible - but there is a HUGE PILE of stuff that everyone knows. If you look at any decent graded lists of piano music, you could deduce their path yourself. However, they all did this with the proper TEACHER - there may be a few savants who seemingly play anything without previous education, but they usually hit a wall - and have gaps in their technique, and their expression is often mechanical or non-existent.
